The asphalt magazine since 1994 in Hannover appearing and Lower Saxony widely distributed, social street newspaper . It appears monthly and is sold by homeless, long-term unemployed or otherwise needy people.

history

As the successor to the HIOB's messages published in December 1993 by the Hannoversche Initiative homeless Citizens eV (HIoB), a group of homeless activists around Karin Powser , Asphalt first appeared in Hanover in September 1994. The initiator and until 2012 publisher of the homeless newspaper was Walter Lampe . Over the course of three years, the magazine was sold on the streets in 15 other cities in Lower Saxony. The naming of the street paper refers to the street asphalt , the medium with which homeless people often have contact.

Awards

In 1996 the magazine was honored with the City Culture Prize by the Friends of Hanover . The paper is part of the network of international street papers INSP (International Network of Street Papers). It was recognized by the association in 2008 for the world's best interview and best photo. In 2011 it won the International Street Paper Award for the best photo . In 2016 it was nominated for an award for its concept of regional editions for Hanover and Northwest. The award recognizes special journalistic achievements by street newspapers. In 2013, Asphalt was awarded the Leinestern as a special social project .

financing

The Asphalt non-profit publishing and sales company , based in Hallerstraße, is a non-profit GmbH and has been completely self-financed since it was founded. The project is largely based on donations . Only part of the costs incurred can be covered with the sales revenue and advertising.

organization

75 percent of the shareholders of the street magazine are the Diakonische Werk, Stadtverband Hannover and the Hannoversche Initiative homeless citizens eV (HIoB). 13 permanent employees work regularly at Asphalt (two of them full-time). If necessary, they are supported by around 15 volunteers in the field of public relations. Asphalt magazine is created by professional journalists (four permanent editors) and is aimed at all sections of the population. A wide range of topics is covered: social and societal politics, environmental and scientific reports, interviews with experts and celebrities, columns , tips for events.

After disputes about the editors' salary cuts, the co-editor, majority shareholder and pastor Rainer Müller-Brandes dismissed his colleague Hanna Legatis in September 2018, co-editor Heiko Geiling resigned in solidarity with Legatis. In February 2019, the former regional bishop Margot Käßmann and the cabaret artist Matthias Brodowy were appointed to succeed them.

Asphalt offers relatively poor people the opportunity to make a living without begging . The project gives people the experience of being worth something and being needed. One of the goals of Asphalt-Magazin is to establish communication between buyers and sellers on an equal footing. For many homeless or long-term unemployed , selling the street newspaper is their last chance to earn money in a dignified manner through their own work. There are around 80 street vendors in Hanover who sell the magazine in almost all parts of the city. You buy the magazine in Asphalt Sales for 1.10 euros and then sell it to passers-by for 2.20 euros.

The Asphalt-Magazin is only available in over-the-counter sales with an average circulation of 26,500 copies in the following cities in Lower Saxony and can be purchased from the seller on the street there:

Projects

Asphalt-Magazin regularly offers special social projects:

  • "Social city tour" (homeless facilities, drug help)
  • "Asphalt goes to school" (sensitizing young people to the lives of socially disadvantaged people and reducing prejudices against the homeless)
  • "Bicycle workshop" (exclusively for the seller)
  • "Saturday breakfast for asphalt sellers" (every 3rd Saturday of the month, 9 am - 1 pm, Haller Str. 3)
