The Georgsbuchhandlung in Hanover , sometimes also known as the Leibniz bookshop , was a bookshop and venue for readings, mostly by high-ranking German authors.

history

The Georgsbuchhandlung was created after the Second World War from an initiative started in 1946 by the Hanoverian Printing and Publishing Company, which is closely related to the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) . With the approval of the British military government , the desired “people's bookstore” was then opened in 1947 in the Kurierhaus at Georgstrasse 52 .

In 1957 the Georgsbuchhandlung temporarily moved to the " Pressehaus " at Goseriede 10 , but in 1964 it was moved back to the former location in the courier house.

Especially after Otto Stender took over the Georgsbuchhandlung - the later founder of the Mentor aid association - Die Leselernhelfer - the company developed into a sought-after address for literature and fiction.

The monthly readings, mostly by high-ranking German authors, were particularly innovative by Otto Stender - the first Hanoverian bookseller. Writers such as Günter Grass , Siegfried Lenz , Doris Dörrie , Hilde Domin , Gabriele Wohmann and many others read on his red sofa , which was soon known throughout the city .

After a complete renovation of the courier house by the owner, rent increases for the now enlarged sales rooms forced Otto Stender in 1997 to relocate the Georgsbuchhandlung to Karmarschstrasse 27 , where he went bankrupt in 1999 .

In the bookstore Stender in Marienstrasse 77 Otto Stender could continue his bookselling activities temporarily.
