Gabriele Wohmann , née Guyot (born May 21, 1932 in Darmstadt ; † June 22, 2015 ibid), was a German writer.

Life

Gabriele Wohmann came from the Darmstadt pastor family Guyot. Her grandfather, Pastor Johannes Guyot (1861–1910), founded the Hessian Diaconal Association there in 1906. Her father Paul Daniel Guyot (1896–1974) also worked as a deaconry pastor in Darmstadt. As a boarding school student, she attended the not yet recognized North Sea education on the island of Langeoog , where she passed an external high school diploma. From 1951 to 1953 she studied German, Romance, English, musicology and philosophy in Frankfurt am Main for four semesters without a degree . She then worked as a teacher at her former school on Langeoog as well as at a community college and a business school. In 1953 she married the German scholar Reiner Wohmann (* 1926, † 2017) and has lived as a writer in Darmstadt since 1956 , where she died on June 22, 2015 at the age of 83. Gabriele Wohmann was buried in the Bessunger Friedhof (grave site: Wall 111). Since mid-March 2017, part of Erbacher Strasse in Darmstadt has been renamed "Gabriele Wohmann-Weg".

plant

Gabriele Wohmann wrote short stories, novels, poems, radio plays, television plays and essays. The author, who considers herself a “graphomaniac”, has been creating an extensive work since the 1950s, in which she initially - in a thoroughly satirical form - records the problems of conventional couple relationships and traditional family structures. She was considered a keen observer.

Wohmann, who had also participated in Group 47 meetings in the 1960s, had adopted a more forgiving tone since the 1970s. In the meantime, your work has taken on the character of a continued chronicle of private life and the conflicts and damage that are hidden behind the façade of the everyday life of mostly well-off characters. Their exploration of the everyday is occasionally criticized as a "retreat into the chamber". Others, on the other hand, see the differently illuminated microcosm as a stage on which the great questions of life are negotiated: "It teaches us to look closely and to notice what is happening where society is held together: in the sphere of privacy."

Wohmann, whose books were translated into 15 languages, was particularly successful in West Germany in the 1970s and 1980s. Significant parts of her work from this period can be attributed to the New Inwardness and partly thematically to the women's movement after 1968 . She achieved her greatest success with the audience with the 1974 novel Paulinchen was alone at home , which had more than 20 editions and was also made into a film in 1981. Admittedly, the film Withdrawal received greater attention within her television work . Almost two million viewers saw the author appear in the role of her protagonist Laura in 1973. Gabriele Wohmann was one of the interpreters of the Frankfurt anthology and appeared regularly with radio plays, essays and new stories.

According to the literary editor Johannes Breckner, Gabriele Wohmann shows herself to be “a master in exploring those minimal disturbances that trigger a latent discomfort” in her short stories When comes love , published in 2010. For the literary scholar Sabine Doering, these stories are exemplary for all of Wohmann's work. There are “scenes from the ordinary, terrible happiness of the middle class that can hardly be imagined more pointedly”, masterful character studies, “which often turn into tragic comedies, but sometimes also into wonderful grotesques”.

Gabriele Wohmann is considered one of the most prominent German-speaking authors in the field of short stories , in more than five decades she has published over 600 stories, so that, according to literary editor Tilman Krause, she can be described as an excellent chronicler of German life and the "queen of short stories".

Memberships

Gabriele Wohmann had been a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts since 1975 and of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt since 1980 . From 1960 to 1988 she was a member of the PEN Center of the Federal Republic of Germany.
