Die-hard bachelor Alban will spend the freezing winter night in a warm hotel bed with the psychologist Mrs. Ellen Gubitz. It's as sure as the amen in church. Alban doesn't know if this middle-aged lady is married, widowed, or divorced. So much is for sure - old Gubitz has run away. In the jury meeting chaired by Dr. Habicht, in which the value of the unified Bible is argued for for hours , Alban had been assigned that stranger as a table lady. Ms. Gubitz did not die of heartache opposite Alban, but freely admits that she was in a relationship with Ludger Rosnik - one of the nine jurors currently conferring. Before the meeting with Ellen, Ludger had highlighted the psychologist Alban as the calming pole in the jury. That is also evident from the course of the meeting. Alban, who condemns the “flattening efforts of our epoch”, only briefly expresses his displeasure with the seemingly endless Martin Luther discussion once. Although he still has a say in editorial offices and proofreading, it seems that in recent times neither an editor nor a proofreader has read his newer articles carefully through to the end.

Ellen Gubitz gives Alban the impression of an unfaithful woman. The Chekhov admirer Alban calls it a cold chop. But when this woman leaves the conference room with him at his invitation, the cold chop suddenly turns into a heated roast partridge. Alban no longer understands himself. If he had a woman at his side, he would only have taken a night nurse to date. Because he always wanted to be alone that night. Alban throws this good resolution overboard and bravely kisses Ellen outside in the winter cold.
