Georg Mackensen Literature Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Georg Mackensen Literature Prize for the best German short story in the German language was awarded from 1962 to 1985.

The prize was donated in 1960 by Georg Mackensen , a German publisher and co-owner of the Georg Westermann publishing house (today: Westermann Printing and Publishing Group in Braunschweig ). After Mackensen's death, the prize was not awarded in 1966. The awards by Westermann-Verlag were resumed the following year. The prize was originally endowed with 3,000  DM , in 1976 the prize money was increased to 5,000 DM.

In addition to the publisher Georg Mackensen and Jürgen Mackensen (from 1967), the jury also included the editors of Westermannsmonthshefte , in whose November edition the award-winning short stories were first published. The short stories submitted had to be unpublished, could not exceed 12 typewriter pages and were not submitted anonymously to the jury . With a few exceptions, the award winners were already renowned authors. Occasionally, additional prizes were awarded to young authors endowed with 500 DM.

With the sale of the Westermann publishing house to Medien Union , Westermann's monthly magazines ceased to appear and the Georg Mackensen Literature Prize was no longer upheld. The last award was in 1985.
