The Marie Street is a major arterial road in the Hanover district of South City . At the time of the Kingdom of Hanover it was named after the Marienkapelle in front of the Aegidientor.

course

The course of the road extends in a west-east direction between Aegidientorplatz and Braunschweiger Platz . The eastern continuation towards Messeschnellweg and Kleefeld is called Hans-Böckler-Allee.

Marienstraße has two lanes between Aegidientorplatz and the intersection with the streets Berliner Allee and Sallstraße. In this area it is the border between the Südstadt and the Mitte district with its Warmbüchen district . To the east of the intersection, on the former Misburger Damm, it runs for the most part in four lanes. Shortly before the eastern end of Marienstraße, the Hanover-Göttingen railway line is crossed.

Previous history

The Marienstraße was part of the old road to Misburg and Kirchrode . In its course, the road out of town (from the Henrietten Foundation ) takes up the former Misburger Damm (also: Misburgerdamm), which was also named until around 1950, and follows the state road L 384. Until the construction of the Südschnellweg in 1954, it was also part of the federal road 65 .

particularities

Typical administration building from the Nazi era on Marienstraße, corner of Papenstieg
"Jante" restaurant in a former toilet block

The St. Marien garden church with its cemetery and the Henriettenstiftung hospital are located on Marienstraße at the intersection of Sallstraße and Berliner Allee. The Henrietten Foundation was founded in 1859 by Queen Marie of Saxony-Altenburg with the inheritance of her aunt Henriette of Nassau-Weilburg .

The former administration building of the Hanover-Braunschweigische Stromversorgungs AG is located on the corner of the street Papenstieg . The building, which was built in 1937, is a typical example of the representative company headquarters architecture of the Third Reich at that time .

On Marienstraße, the “Jante”, which opened in 2015, is currently (2020) the only restaurant in Hanover that has a star rating in the Michelin Guide . The Jante initially received one star in the 2017 Michelin Guide, and a second was added in the 2020 Michelin Guide. The restaurant is located on Braunschweiger Platz in a former toilet block that was previously used as a restaurant.

Metro station

At the intersection of Marienstraße and Sallstraße is the Marienstraße underground station on the Hanover city railway's C route . The trams of lines 4 (Garbsen – Roderbruch), 5 (Stöcken – Anderten), 6 (Nordhafen – Messe / Ost) and 11 (Halthoffstraße – Zoo) operate here. When the station was built in the late 1980s, it was built in such a way that it could be expanded as a crossing station when the previously planned D-line was built. However, the Hanover region will not pursue these plans any further.
