Praetorius Music Prize
The Praetorius Lower Saxony Music Prize has been awarded annually since 2005 by the State of Lower Saxony in several categories to artists who represent Lower Saxony's diverse musical life regionally and internationally. The award is made by the Lower Saxony Ministry for Science and Culture as part of a festive event.

Thomas Hengelbrock was honored with the Praetorius Music Prize 2012 for outstanding artistic achievement. According to the jury , it combines unconventional programming, interpretive experimentation and innovative music education . The current chief conductor of the NDR Symphony Orchestra in Hamburg has worked with world-class artists such as Cecilia Bartoli and Plácido Domingo . He has made a name for himself internationally with his Balthasar Neumann Choir and Ensemble .
The prize in the “International Peace Music Prize” category went to the dissidents because they mediate between different cultures. According to the jury, they have stood for international understanding and an equal mix of musical styles for years . The group, founded in 1981, coined the term world music long before it reached Europe.
Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja received the Music Innovation Prize for her innovative understanding of music and her extraordinary creativity. According to the jury, she stands for an unconventional, charmingly stubborn style. Their performances, which are always barefoot , cover the spectrum of the violin repertoire from baroque to new music .
The Lower Saxony Composition Prize was awarded to the composer Harald Weiss for distinctive individuality in his compositions. According to the jury, his work is characterized by its independence from dogmatic trends in new music. His artistic work is progressive and versatile. He created experimental works such as instrumental theater pieces, scenic sound projects, happenings , performances and turned to opera in the 1990s .
The State of Lower Saxony supports young talents in their artistic development with the three sponsorship awards. The awards went to the jazz trio Tritonusses, the pianist Elisabeth Brauß and the drummer Simon Etzold. The young artists have already shown outstanding musical achievements in national, such as Jugend musiziert , and international competitions. With the jazz formation Tritonusses, the jury praised the extraordinary sound with influences from the Orient, Africa, pop and church music . The line-up, consisting of vocalist Katharina Knaus, trombonist Matthias Wagemann and vibraphonist Henning Brungs, is also unusual. The jury sees Elisabeth Brauß as a virtuoso interpreter and highly talented pianist with an ambitious international career. According to the jury, Simon Etzold is one of the most talented young drummers who already has a lot of orchestral experience.
The Institute for Early Support for the Musically Gifted (IFF), which was founded in 2000, received an award in the voluntary commitment category. As part of the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media , it promotes the professional training of musically gifted children and young people as potential music students.
