Lower Saxony Art Prize

The Lower Saxony Art Prize (Lower Saxony Art Prize for Fine Arts) is awarded annually by the State of Lower Saxony to Lower Saxony artists for outstanding services. The sponsorship award supports young artists in their creative development.

The art prize, endowed with EUR 15,000, was initiated in 1961 by Lower Saxony's Minister of Culture Richard Voigt (1895–1970). Prize winners so far include: Siegfried Strohbach (1994), Thomas Huber (1995), Rolf Bier (1997), Timm Ulrichs (1998), Thomas Virnich (2001), Raimund Girke (2002), Marina Abramović (2003), Andreas Slominski (2004), Leni Hoffmann (2005) and Bogomir Ecker (2006).

The sponsorship award is endowed with EUR 7,500. Prize winners include Gabriele Marwede (1962), Ror Wolf (1965) and Michael Beutler (2004).

The awards are made on the recommendation of a specialist commission. They are presented by the Lower Saxony Minister for Science and Culture. The award winners will be honored at various locations in Lower Saxony.

Others

In addition to the Lower Saxony Art Prize, the State of Lower Saxony awards prizes for music ( Praetorius Music Prize ) and literature ( Nicolas Born Prize ) with their respective sponsorship prizes, as well as the Lower Saxony State Prize .
