Joana Mallwitz (* 1986 in Hildesheim ) is a German conductor , pianist and general music director at the State Theater in Nuremberg and former general music director in Erfurt . At the age of 27 she was the youngest general music director in Europe. In 2019, Opernwelt magazine voted her conductor of the year .

Life

Joana Mallwitz was born in 1986 in Hildesheim as the daughter of a teacher. She learned violin and piano at the age of five. At the age of 13 she became a student of Christa-Maria Hartmann and Karl-Heinz Kämmerling and thus an early student at the University of Music and Theater in Hanover . At this university she studied conducting with Martin Brauß and Eiji Ōue , piano with Kämmerling and Bernd Goetzke .

The artist is married to the tenor Simon Bode.

Professional background

In 2006 Mallwitz took up an engagement as a solo repetiteur with conducting engagements at the Theater der Stadt Heidelberg , where she briefly took over the direction of the premiere of Puccini's Madama Butterfly . From 2007 to 2011 she was Second Kapellmeisterin and assistant to the General Music Director Cornelius Meister in Heidelberg and conducted various performances of all kinds, including Mozart's Idomeneo , Le nozze di Figaro , La clemenza di Tito and Die Zauberflöte , Beethoven's Fidelio , Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia , Verdi's Aida and Rigoletto , Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin and Richard Strauss' Salome .

Joana Mallwitz has made guest appearances at the Zurich Opera House ( Macbeth ), at the Hamburg State Opera ( L'elisir d'amore ), at the Royal Copenhagen Opera House ( Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci , The Flying Dutchman , Macbeth , Madama Butterfly ) and with Wagner's Rheingold and Götterdämmerung at the Latvian National Opera in Riga, at the Frankfurt Opera a . a. with a new production of The Merry Widow and at the Macau International Music Festival.

She performed concerts a. a. with the Royal Danish Orchestra , the Dresden Philharmonic , the Gothenburg Symphony and the Kremerata Baltica .

For the 2014/2015 season of the Erfurt Theater, Mallwitz was appointed the youngest general music director in Europe at the age of 27, and in 2018/2019 she took up the position of conductor at the State Theater in Nuremberg in the same position .

In 2019, Opernwelt magazine voted her conductor of the year ; Christian Thielemann , Kirill Petrenko and John Eliot Gardiner had received this honor in the previous years . According to the judgment of critics, Joana Mallwitz managed to “work out great stories from music”, she was an “exceptional conductor”, with her “everything was really right”.

In 2020 she was the first woman in the history of the Salzburg Festival to be entrusted with an entire series of opera performances, Così fan tutte .
