Erich Riede

Erich Riede (born May 3, 1903 in London , † September 20, 1986 in Schwabach ) was a German conductor and composer .

Life

Riede was born the son of the authorized signatory Carl Riede (1878-1952) and his wife Eveleen Mary Flynn (1867-1947). He attended high school in Offenbach am Main . He completed his music studies from 1919 to 1923 at the Dr. Hoch'schen Konservatorium - Musikakademie Frankfurt am Main with Eduard Jung (piano), Waldemar von Bausznern (composition) and Bernhard Sekles (instrumentation), then from 1923 to 1925 at the Hochschule für Musik Berlin-Charlottenburg with Leonid Kreutzer (piano), Leo Schrattenholz (theory) and Julius Prüwer (conducting).

He had his first engagements as a solo repetitor at the Landestheater Darmstadt (1925–1927) and at the Staatstheater Stuttgart (1927–1929). He made his debut as a conductor in 1927 at the Staatstheater Stuttgart with the opera An everything is hatched! by Siegfried Wagner . From 1926 to 1933 he worked as an assistant conductor at the Bayreuth Festival . In 1930/31 he was Arturo Toscanini's personal assistant there . From 1929 to 1933 he was employed as an "assistant conductor" at the Metropolitan Opera in New York .

From 1933 to 1939 he was employed as "First Kapellmeister" at the Cologne City Opera . He was followed by engagements as opera director at the Gablonz City Theater in the Sudetenland (1940–1943) and as Kapellmeister at the Reichenberg City Theater in the Sudetenland (1943–1945). From 1942 to 1945 he was a guest conductor with the "German Philharmonic Prague".

After the Second World War he was Kapellmeister at the Nationaltheater Mannheim (1949) and “First Kapellmeister” at the Dresden State Opera (1950–1952). There he conducted a. a. a gala performance on the occasion of the 1000th performance of the opera Der Freischütz since its premiere in Dresden in 1821.

Riede worked for many years as general music director , u. a. at the Dessau Theater (1952–1954). In 1953 and 1954 he conducted the Wagner Festival in Dessau. From 1954 he was engaged as "musical director" at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern . At the beginning of the 1956/57 season he came to the Nuremberg Opera House as GMD . In 1958 he conducted Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck at the Nuremberg Opera House with great success . During his time at GMD in Nuremberg, Riede placed particular emphasis on the performance of Richard Wagner's works . In 1963 he made a guest appearance with the ensemble of the Nuremberg Opera in Barcelona , where he directed performances of Lohengrin and Die Walküre . In 1964 Riede moved to the Mainfranken Theater in Würzburg as GMD ; he stayed there until his retirement.

After his retirement, Riede returned to Nuremberg, where he taught a master class in opera composition at the Nuremberg Conservatory .

Riede composed a. a. Orchestral pieces, songs and the two now forgotten operas Riccio (first performance 1947; Landestheater Coburg ) and König Lustik (first performance 1951; Staatstheater Kassel ).

Riede was married to the opera singer Nora Bloch-Slevogt .
