Cornelius Meister (born February 23, 1980 in Hanover ) is a German conductor and pianist .

Cornelius Meister spent his childhood in Hanover. After a preschool for particularly talented children (1985–1986) he attended the Friesenschule (now: Johanna Friesen Elementary School) from 1986 to 1990, followed by the orientation stage on Lüerstrasse. From 1992 to 1996 he attended the humanistic Kaiser Wilhelm and Ratsgymnasium in Hanover .

From the early 1980s, Cornelius Meister received piano lessons from his father Konrad Meister and his mother Anne Hammann-Meister . From 1984 he enjoyed cello lessons with Konrad Haesler for ten years . From 1986 to 1993 he was a member of the choir of the music school in Hanover with Karin Mehlig. From 1989 to 1992 he worked at the Hanover Music School with George A. Speckert with synthesizers and electronic music.

From 1986 to 1996, Cornelius Meister regularly won first prizes as a pianist in the Jugend musiziert competition at regional and state level. In 1992 and 1996 he also won second prize in the solo piano category and first prize in the piano accompaniment category in the national competition. In 1996 he and his duo partner, the clarinetist Clemens Trautmann , were also awarded first prize at the Southwest German Chamber Music Competition .

Education

From 1996 to 2003, Meister studied at the University of Music and Theater (now: University of Music, Theater and Media Hanover ) with Konrad Meister (piano), Martin Brauß and Eiji Ōue (conducting), Jan Schroeder (horn), Konrad Haesler ( Cello), Peter Schnaus and Arnfried Edler (musicology), Ulrich Pothast (philosophy), Martin Brauss and Frank Märkel (music theory). In 2001 he received the piano teacher diploma and in 2003 the conductor diploma. From 2000 to 2001 he studied at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with Dennis Russell Davies , Jorge Rotter (orchestra direction) and Karl Kamper (choir direction).

Meister's studies were supported by various scholarships: from 1996 he received a scholarship from the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben and from 1997 a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . In 1998 he was a scholarship holder of the Bayreuth Festival at the suggestion of the Richard Wagner Association in Hanover . After all, from 2001 to 2003 he enjoyed a scholarship from the Akademie Musiktheater heute of the Deutsche Bank Foundation .

During this time, Meister continued to win prizes as a pianist together with his duo partner, the clarinettist Clemens Trautmann: in 1998 the Radeberger Förderpreis of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and the audience award and in 2000 the prize of the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben at the German Music Competition . In the following year the duo was included in the national selection of concerts for young artists . As a conductor, Meister was awarded 3rd prize in the conducting university competition in 2003.

During his studies, Meister gained experience with various assistants: From 1997 he was a guest conductor at the State Opera Hanover and at the NDR Radiophilharmonie . In 1998 he worked as musical assistant to the conductor Martin Brauß at the world premiere of the London Opera under Siege by David Wilde , a co-production of the Hanover State Opera and the Hanover University of Music. In 2001 he was the musical assistant to the conductor Hans Urbanek in the new production of the opera Elektra by Richard Strauss at the Hanover State Opera. In 2004 he supported the conductor Pierre Boulez as musical assistant in the new production of Parsifal by Richard Wagner at the Bayreuth Festival.

Meister comes from a family of musicians. His father Konrad Meister was a pianist and piano professor at the Hanover University of Music, his mother also works as a piano teacher. His half-brother Rudolf Meister is a pianist and President (formerly: Rector) of the Mannheim University of Music . His sister Gabriele Meister is a journalist.

Cornelius Meister has been married to the singer Katharina Sellschopp-Meister since 2006 . They have three children together.
