Be it a classical string quartet, electro DJ or jazz combo: On Music Day, musicians celebrate the diversity of musical life in Germany, across all ages and genres. The day of music has been taking place annually since 2009 on the initiative of the German Music Council , since 2019 always on June 21. On this day of action, professional and amateur musicians bring the whole country to life; Theaters, concert halls and opera houses also take part in Music Day, as do clubs, schools and music colleges, clubs and cabaret theaters. The common goal is to underline and celebrate the importance and value of music in Germany. At the same time, the diverse events on Music Day also open up new approaches to the world of music for those interested.

The “Tag der Musik” initiative is funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media and the Society for the Exploitation of Ancillary Rights. Well-known personalities from politics, such as Dr. Norbert Lammert , Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble and Sahra Wagenknecht support the day of music with public statements. The ongoing regulations to contain the corona pandemic have made it necessary to adjust the concept for 2020. The German Music Council has therefore initiated in cooperation with the nmz the series #CoronaTalk: Reply In video statements renowned artists from the classical, pop and jazz music as mine (singer) , Joris (musician) , Nils Mönkemeyer and Julia Hülsmann on three questions about musical life in Corona times and think about the importance of music in this crisis. In addition, the German Music Council and its cooperation partners in 2020 call for people to celebrate Music Day individually and creatively under the motto Musik @ home: whether making music together via the app, with a spontaneous concert for the neighbors on the balcony or sending a playlist with favorite pieces to friends. On the initiative of the Fête de la Musique on June 21, a series of “window concerts” will also invite people to make music.
