Nils Mönkemeyer

Nils Mönkemeyer (* 1978 in Holzwickede ) is a German violist and university professor . He gives concerts worldwide as a soloist and chamber musician.

Life

Nils Mönkemeyer is the oldest child of guitarist Thomas Brendgens-Mönkemeyer and his wife Heidemarie Mönkemeyer. He began his musical training on the violin as a young student at the University of the Arts in Bremen . In 1996, when his violin teacher Maria Grevesmühl was killed while stealing her Stradivarius , he switched to the viola and to Christian Pohl at the Hanover University of Music . From October 2000 he studied with Hariolf Schlichtig at the Munich University of Music and Theater . He finished his studies in 2003 with a diploma “with distinction”. From 2003 to 2004 he was with Veronika Hagen at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. In 2006 he passed his concert exam with Hariolf Schlichtig in Munich "with distinction".

Nils Mönkemeyer first played an Italian viola made in 1742 by Giuseppe Cavaleri (on loan from the Rhineland-Palatinate State Collection). His current instrument comes from the workshop of the violin maker Philipp Augustin.

He was assistant professor at the Escuela Superior Musica Reina Sofia in Madrid, from October 2009 he became professor for viola at the Academy of Music Carl Maria von Weber Dresden , and since the winter semester 2011/2012 he has been teaching at the University of Music and Theater in Munich . He is exclusively under contract with Sony BMG .

In 2014, Nils Mönkemeyer was the patron of the “Instrument of the Year” project initiated by the Schleswig-Holstein State Music Council , in which the viola was selected.

Together with Julia Fischer , Alexander Sitkovetsky and Benjamin Nyffenegger he forms the Julia Fischer Quartet.

In the 2016/17 season he is artist-in-residence of the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra and artistic director of the Rügen Festival Spring ( Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival ) 2017.

In 2019 he developed the Festival Klassik für alle together with Caritas in Bonn . Needy and disadvantaged people such as the homeless and others who cannot afford a concert are given patent tickets that others have bought for them. The festival also includes encounters between Mönkemeyer and people in different Caritas institutions.

In June 2019 he gave the world premiere of Helmut Krausser's viola concerto dedicated to him with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Jens Georg Bachmann .
