history

In 1954, Paul Pieper , director of the Westphalian State Museum for Art and Cultural History Münster , bought the picture of Armgard and Walburgis , part of the family portrait of Count Johann II von Rietberg by the painter Hermann tom Ring , at an auction at Sotheby’s for 10,000 pounds. In doing so, he exceeded his limit by £ 4,000. The result of a 'crisis meeting' with the head of administration was the decision to send a circular to interested personalities and institutions from industry and business in Westphalia to ask for help. In a very short time, donations and commitments were received in excess of 80,000 DM. Today the picture is worth many times what was paid back then. The general participation in this acquisition led to the foundation of the association.

The founding members were: Gustav Deiters (Ibbenbüren), Bernhard Florin and Theodor Hillenhinrichs (Recklinghausen), Walter Kellermann (Gelsenkirchen), Gustav Mutzenbach, (Neubeckum) and Franz Josef Gieselmann, Friedrich Leopold Hüffer, Anton Köchling , Robert Paasch, Alfred Steiger and Karl Zuhorn (each from Münster).

The board of trustees was elected at the first ordinary general meeting on April 4, 1957. According to the statutes, it consisted of a minimum of five and a maximum of nine members. The maximum number was later increased to twelve. Five members were initially elected.

The Westphalian State Museum for Art and Cultural History as well as the other Westphalian art and local museums, as well as contemporary art, whereby young talents were given special consideration even then, as well as Westphalian literature and music, enjoyed funding priority.

In 1992 Hartwig Lahrmann was hired as a full-time managing director and the GWK was reorganized. Since 1995, the GWK has been supporting outstanding young Westphalian artists under the motto “Support the best”, developing and organizing cultural projects for the region and encouraging companies and private individuals to get involved in art in Westphalia-Lippe. Susanne Schulte has been the managing director since 1995; The chairmen of the board were Friedrich Nolte (1992–2002) and Karl Teppe (2000–2008). Barbara Rüschoff-Parzinger has been chairwoman of the GWK since 2009 .
