Paul Pieper

Paul Friedrich Adolf Pieper (born March 4, 1912 in Detmold ; † August 24, 2000 in Münster ) was a German art historian .

Live and act

Pieper received his doctorate in 1936 at the University of Bonn under Paul Clemen and Alfred Stange with a thesis on the methodological possibilities of art geography.

He was initially a volunteer from 1935, later a curator and from 1972 to 1977 director of the Westphalian State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Münster . In 1954 he bought the family picture of Count Johann II von Rietberg by the painter Hermann tom Ring for £ 10,000 at an auction at Sotheby’s . In doing so, he exceeded his limit by £ 4,000. During his subsequent time at the State Museum, works by Kurt Schwitters , Otto Dix , Max Ernst , Paul Klee , Oskar Schlemmer , Hans Arp and Wols were purchased.

Honors

Pieper was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia on May 26, 1997 .
