Johann Koerbecke (* around 1415-20 in Coesfeld or Münster ; † June 13, 1491 in Münster) was a Westphalian late Gothic painter who worked in Münster.

life and work

Johann Koerbecke can be traced in Münster from 1446 onwards. The since 1471 inhabited house, located in the Aa leading impasse paths end , sold his widow Else 1495 to the sculptor Henry Brabender .

Koerbeke was a representative of the Westphalian school of painting. His colorful work follows on from Conrad von Soest and stylistically builds on him and Stefan Lochner . It is believed that he worked with the master of the Schöppinger Altar , but also with the master of 1473 in Münster.

Birth of Christ , 1457, part of the Marienfelder Altar

The Marienfeld Altar from 1457 from the Marienfeld Monastery is considered to be Koerbecke's main work . This is a winged altar whose 16 panels are scattered around the world in museums. Six of the panels are on display in the LWL State Museum for Art and Cultural History in Münster. The middle section of the Amelsbueren Altar by Koerbecke is also shown here. As one of the first works, two wings of the Langenhorster Altar (between 1440 and 1450) with four passion scenes each, which are also exhibited in the State Museum, are attributed to him.
