Folkert Meeuw

Folkert Meeuw (born November 11, 1946 in Wiesbaden ) is a former German swimmer . He won 15 titles at German championships for Wasserfreunde Wuppertal and is three-time relay European champion.

At the European Swimming Championships in Barcelona in 1970 he was a member of the victorious 4 × 200 m freestyle relay; over 200 m butterfly and with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay he won silver. 1974 in Vienna he won gold with the relay in 4 × 200 m freestyle and 4 × 100 m medley.

His greatest individual successes include the finals of the 200 m butterfly at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico (6th place) and at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich (8th place). At the swimming world championships in 1973 Meeuw won bronze as the final swimmer of the 4 x 200 meter freestyle relay.

For his numerous victories as a swimmer, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf on November 30, 1970.

Meeuw taught sport at the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Schule and at the Wilhelm-Heinrich-von-Riehl-Schule in Wiesbaden.

Meeuw's wife Jutta was also an outstanding swimming athlete, son Helge won the title over 50 m back at the 2006 European Swimming Championships .
