The water friends Wuppertal 1883 e. V. are a German swimming club . The Alfred-Panke-Bad operated by the club is located on the club's premises.

history

The traditional association Wasserfreunde Wuppertal was founded in 1883 in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal . Right from the start, the focus was on promoting health and training children and young people to swim.

The work of the then 1st Chairman Alfred Panke in the 1920s was formative for the association . He is also the namesake of the club's own outdoor pool on Bendahler Strasse in Wuppertal.

The water lovers in the "Hoffmann era"

From the late 1960s to the 1980s, Wasserfreunde was one of the strongholds of competitive swimming in the Federal Republic of Germany. Under the coach Heinz Hoffmann in particular, there were numerous national record holders and champions, participants in World and European Championships as well as Olympic Summer Games such as Rotraud Wiegand , Jochen Roos , Jürgen Altenhofen , Ursula Langenkamp (née Karger), Michael Holthaus , Ernst-Joachim Küppers , Folkert Meeuw , Jutta Weber , Peter Nocke , Olaf von Schilling , Angelika Kraus and Ralf Beckmann on the line-up of the Wuppertal people, who apart from their "own bath" at the time had their sporty domicile in the Elberfeld swimming opera .

During this time, the club's athletes achieved a total of 122 DSV championships, ten European and one world championship, and also achieved 184 German, twelve European and three world records.

The water polo department

The first men's team played in the regional league in the 1980s and, with coach Lutz Jäncke (formerly Aegir Uerdingen, ASC Duisburg and SC Düsseldorf), was promoted to the Bundesliga in 1986 and was able to hold this league until 1990. Lutz Jäncke was a former youth, junior and senior national player. During this time, a number of young talents developed who also played in the German youth and junior national teams. Stefan Vogt even became a national team player. Since the relegation of the first men's team from the Bundesliga in the 1990s, it has always played in the top tier of the Regionalliga West (previously: third-highest league) and in the 2005/06 season occupied 4th place in the table, which was necessary to participate in the promotion tournament to the 1st Bundesliga entitled.

After not participating in the promotion tournament to the 1st Bundesliga, the 1st men's team played in the newly created 2nd League West in the 2006/07 season. There she also plays in 2018, but in a starting community with SC Solingen as SGW SC Solingen / Wasserfreunde Wuppertal .

The 2nd team of the Wasserfreunde plays in the Oberliga-West and was in the middle of the table in the 2008/09 season.

The 3rd team plays at the district level in the Rhein-Wupper League.

Club life

Club life takes place in the club's own outdoor pool in summer . The "Alfred-Panke-Bad" is located on the spacious area in the middle of the Bendahler Bach Valley . In addition to the 50 × 20 meter swimming pool, there is a children's pool, a football field, two tennis courts and a beach volleyball court. The whole thing is framed by spacious lawns.

Since November 2005, Wasserfreunde Wuppertal has had a club restaurant again. The new building is leased to the operator of an Italian restaurant and also serves as a club meeting point.
