The Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition has been held annually since 1950 in the "Music City of Markneukirchen ".

In 1993 he was accepted by the World Federation of International Music Competitions based in Geneva . Since 2005, the patron has been the conductor Kurt Masur .

Manfred Scherzer is the honorary president . Julius Berger is responsible for the management of the string instruments and Peter Damm for the wind instruments . The cultural foundation of the Free State of Saxony is funding the project.

Young strings and wind instruments are alternately awarded. Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners in the categories.

The competition is open to people under 30 years of age. There will be three selection rounds and a final. Technology, individuality and the actual performance are evaluated. The repertoire is given. The first prizes are endowed with € 5000. The second and third with 3500 and 2500 respectively. The Manfred Scherzer Prize and a sponsorship award from the district administrator of the Vogtlandkreis are also awarded.

Master classes are also held as part of the event .
