Raphaella Smits

Raphaella Smits (born February 1, 1957 near Antwerp ) is a Belgian classical guitarist .

Smits studied at the Royal Conservatory in Antwerp until 1978 and then at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels until 1981. In 1986 she was the first woman to win the prestigious Certamen Internacional de Guitarra Francesc Tàrrega .

Among other things, Smits is known for her interpretation on 7- and 8-string guitars. She has made numerous recordings of classical and contemporary compositions, since 1988 exclusively for the Belgian record label Accent Records. Many of her recordings were made in the Vereenigde Doopsgezinde Kerk in Haarlem .

Among other things, Smits teaches at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven and gives master classes worldwide.
