The abandoned factory premises in Patras, 2011

Piraiki-Patraiki SA (Πειραϊκή-Πατραϊκή) was a manufacturer of textiles from Patras . Competition mostly from the Far East caused problems for the company, so that the second largest private employer in Greece and the tenth largest textile manufacturer in Europe had to file for bankruptcy in 1996.

history

The company was founded in 1919 as Patraiki in Patras, followed by the takeover of the competing company Piraiki from Piraeus in 1931. In the 1950s, the company ran into difficulties that were overcome by a wave of modernization of the plants. This also included the purchase of an IBM 1401 computer and the opening of a factory in Sudan.

The company had its own design department, but also employed external designers, such as TH Robsjohn-Gibbings, to better address regional markets.

In 1983 the majority of shares of 64% was taken over by the state, whereby the company was still privately operated. In 1988 the textile designer Yannis Tseklenis became head of the company. Ultimately, the company was no longer able to operate profitably due to competition from the Far East and the opening of the market. In 1996 the state stopped all grants and the company went bankrupt. The company was also involved in the Wilhelm Lorch Foundation.
