Max Sommerhalder (* 1947 in Solothurn , Switzerland ) is a German and Swiss trumpeter and university lecturer in Detmold .

Career

Max Sommerhalder studied at the Zurich University of Music with Henri Adelbrecht . Studies with Pierre Thibaud (Paris), Philip Jones (London) and Horst Eichler (Berlin) followed.

He was solo trumpeter in the orchestra Musikkollegium Winterthur , in the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich and in the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin . Temporary or with temporary contracts, he has worked in the following orchestras, among others: Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden , Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (Frankfurt am Main), SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg , RAI Turin , Lucerne Festival Orchestra , Orchester de la Suisse Romande (Geneva), German Bach soloists , La Stravaganza Cologne and Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca. Max Sommerhalder played under conductors such as Vladimir Ashkenazy , Rudolf Barshai , Lorin Maazel , Herbert Blomstedt , Giuseppe Sinopoli , Antal Doráti , Gennady Rozhdestvensky , Erich Leinsdorf , Kirill Kondrashin , Charles Dutoit , Rudolf Kempe , Eliahu Inbal , Nikolaus Harnoncourt , Michael Gielen , David Zinman , Christoph Eschenbach , Stanisław Skrowaczewski , Serge Baudo , Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Sergiu Celibidache .

As a soloist he performed in four continents. His recordings include world premiere recordings of romantic standard works by Oskar Böhme , Gustav Cords and Wassilij Brandt . From 1985 to 2013 he worked as a professor for trumpet at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold .

Educational activity

Max Sommerhalder gave master classes at the following training centers: Tōhō Gakuen School of Music (Tokyo), Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Moscow), Australian National University (Canberra), Real Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid , Sydney Conservatorium (Sydney), Conservatorio "Giuseppe Verdi" (Milan), Hogeschool voor de Kunsten (Rotterdam), Franz Liszt Music Academy (Budapest), University of Gothenburg , Sibelius Academy (Helsinki), Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne), Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse (Paris ), Centro de Acción Social por la Música “ El Sistema ” (Caracas), Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas (Bogotá) and Conservatorio “Rafael Orozco” (Córdoba).

He was a jury member at the ARD International Music Competition (Munich), the Trumpet Competition at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Moscow), the Concorso Internazionale Città di Porcia, the Markneukirchen International Instrumental Competition, the German University Competition, the Jeju Brass Competition, and the International Altenburg Competition (Bad Säckingen), at the Pilisvörösvar International Trumpet Competition, at the Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Competition, at the Vassily Brandt International Trumpet Competition and at the International Music Competition “ Prague Spring ”.

Numerous students and graduates of his Detmold trumpet class have won prizes in important competitions and positions in well-known orchestras.
