Prague Spring (Festival)

The Prague Spring ( Pražské jaro in Czech ) is a multi-week cultural and music festival with the participation of internationally known artists, which has been taking place in Prague since 1946 .

It begins every year on May 12th, the anniversary of the death of the composer Bedřich Smetana . The festival traditionally opens with Smetana's cycle My Fatherland (Má vlast) , which also includes the famous symphonic poem Die Moldau (Vltava) . In general, the 9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven concludes .

The brief flourishing of freedom in communist Czechoslovakia in 1968 is also known as the “ Prague Spring ”.
