Petru Iuga

Petru Iuga (* 1974 in Săliştea de Sus , Maramureş district ) is a Romanian double bass player and has been a professor at the Mannheim University of Music and Performing Arts since 2010.

Iuga won 1st prizes at the International Double Bass Competition in Markneukirchen in 1999 and at the International Competition in Capbreton , France in 2000.

Petru Iuga received his first double bass lessons in his native Romania, a. a. with Prof. Ioan Cheptea, but then continued his training at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Gstaad (Switzerland) at the invitation of Sir Yehudi Menuhin. Further studies at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern and at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris followed. Petru Iuga was a member of the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, first double bass player in the Munich Chamber Orchestra, performed as first double bass player with the London Symphony Orchestra and is currently a professor at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Mannheim. He has won numerous international competitions and won first prize at the international double bass competitions in Markneukirchen, Germany (1999) and in Capbreton, France (2001).

In March 2008, the Denon CD label released a recording of Franz Schubert's Trout Quintet with the Carmina Quartet and Petru Iuga.
