Sinopia (after the Black Sea city of Sinope in Turkey ) is a red-brown to ocher-like natural color . It was used in traditional oil painting or for sketching frescoes and mosaics . The reddish color is due to iron oxide compounds.

The step of sketching the outlines for a fresco directly on the wall is also called Sinopia . This was done until the early 16th century ; later, the majority of the sketches were first recorded on cardboard, on which the outlines were then perforated and transferred to the wall with coal dust ( Spolvero ).
