Unexpect (often spelled uneXpect or unexpecT ) is a Canadian extreme metal band from Montreal , whose music combines a variety of different styles.

history

In 1996 Artagoth and Zircon founded the thrash metal band Unexpected , which they renamed Unexpect after Syriak joined in the same year. As more band members gradually joined and the first recordings were made, the decision was made to produce a first album, which was recorded in the summer of 1998 and published and distributed independently in the following year under the name Utopia . To boost sales, the band relied on the Internet and extensive word of mouth , which quickly earned them the support they wanted from the online community and their first sales successes.

After several line-up changes , the EP We, Invaders was finally released in 2003 on the Canadian label Galy Records . Although it only consisted of 4 songs, this Unexpect earned worldwide critical acclaim and a record deal with the American label The End Records. The second album In a Flesh Aquarium was released there in 2006 , which is seamlessly linked to the EP and was able to convince the critics despite the unconventional and experimental music.

The band played over a hundred gigs on a total of eight tours between 2006 and 2008 . From September to November 2009 the band also supported Dream Theater , Opeth and Bigelf on the European part of the Progressive Nation Tour 2009.

style

Initially founded as a pure Thrash Metal band, Unexpect quickly developed their own style of music. a. Elements of progressive metal , death metal , heavy metal , jazz , ambient , circus music and often classical music combined. On the first album you can also hear strong black metal influences.

Extreme style changes, contrapuntal melodies and frequent dissonances up to cacophony are characteristic of the music . The use of a multitude of different instruments, high-contrast vocals and surrealistic- bizarre lyrics are also typical .
