Bigelf is a progressive metal band from Los Angeles , California , USA .
Band history
The band was founded in 1991 by Damon Fox and Richard Anton as a psychedelic rock band in Los Angeles, California. In 1995 their first EP Closer to Doom was released . After starting out as a quartet, the band shrank to a trio with Fox (vocals, keyboards, guitar), AHM Butler-Jones (vocals, guitar) and Steve Frothingham (drums). In 1997, the debut album Money Machine was recorded, but there was no label that wanted to release the album. In 2000 the Swedish independent label Record Heaven took on the album. The Swedish bassist Duffy Snowhill joined the band after a European tour. In 2001, Ace replaced Mark Butler-Jones. Shortly afterwards the band got a record deal with a Swedish subsidiary of the Warner group and released the album Hex there in 2002 . In 2008 the band switched back to a smaller label, Custard Record. The album Cheat the Gallows was released there in 2008 . 2009 they were together with Opeth and Unexpect opening act for Dream Theater during their Progressive Nation 2009 tour.
On December 31, 2009, founding member AHM Butler-Jones died of complications from pneumonia in Knoxville , Tennessee . In the tensions that followed, guitarist Ace Mark left the band in summer 2011.
After a few years of radio silence, Mike Portnoy was introduced as the new drummer on April 3, 2013 . At the same time, the band signed a worldwide contract with the German rock label InsideOut Music . The fourth studio album, Into the Maelstrom , was released on March 3, 2014. During the preparations for the fourth studio album, Luis Carlos Maldonado was introduced as the new guitarist.
style
The band plays a mix of glam , hard and psychedelic rock , for which the musical name Psychedelic Doom was invented. The band mainly names bands from the 1960s and 1970s such as Black Sabbath , T. Rex , Mott the Hoople , Pink Floyd , Queen and the Beatles as influences . Influences from The Move , Roy Wood and the Electric Light Orchestra can also be found on later albums.
