The Dhammayangyi Temple in Bagan was built under King Narathu around 1170 as atonement for the murder of his father Alaungsithu and its architecture is very similar to the Ananda Temple . It is located about one kilometer southeast of Old Bagan.

The temple floor plan corresponds to a Greek cross . The roof surfaces and terraces on the central one-story cuboid are steeply inclined so that the impression of a pyramid is created. Entrance halls are built in front of the four cardinal points. The masonry is of the best quality. Legend has it that the builder Narathu, who is considered to be cruel, had the masons executed if he succeeded in forcing a needle between the bricks.

The inner of the two walkways is walled up. Two Buddha statues sit side by side in the western vestibule . It is possible that the historical Buddha Siddharta Gautama is represented here together with the future fifth Buddha Metteya .
