Career

Rudolf Pichler began his football career in the 2nd regional league at ASC Leobersdorf. In 1950 he made the leap into the A-League to 1. Wiener Neustädter SC , where he was poached by Wiener Austria after only half a season . In the strong storm of Austria with Ernst Melchior , Fritz Kominek , Adolf Huber , Ernst Stojaspal and Lukas Aurednik , he mostly had to move to different positions, but he also made three appearances when he made it to the semi-finals of the Copa Rio 1952 . Subsequently, he was able to establish himself as a regular and in the 1952/53 championship year scored 21 league goals in as many missions. In the following season 1953/54 he contributed 16 goals to the runner-up.

With the departure of Aurednik, Kominek, Stojaspal and Melchior to France, the storm of Austria had changed permanently, causing the club to fall back a little. Nevertheless, Rudolf Pichler was finally able to make the leap into the Austrian national team in 1955 . However, his debut went very badly: against Hungary they lost 6-1 in Budapest, after Rudolf Pichler was caught selling contraband, the ÖFB suspended it until the summer of 1956.

After his return to the team he was only part of the regular team again. At times, Rudolf Sabetzer was preferred to him, but after Adolf Huber's retirement he was back as a center forward. But here he had to take turns with Leopold Baumgartner . Ultimately, Rudolf Pichler decided at the end of 1958 to switch back to the 1st Wiener Neustädter SC in the B-League ; There he shot the blue-whites in 1959 with his long-time storm colleague Adolf Huber as a coach as the shooter king with 28 hits in the A-League.

After advancing with the WNSC, Rudolf Pichler even made a comeback in the national team. In the quarter-finals of the 1960 European Championship , he also scored a goal in a 5-2 draw against France . In Wiener Neustadt he scored 20 league goals again in 1960/61 , but a year later he was relegated to the Regionalliga Ost . The striker moved on to SV Austria Salzburg , but was unable to stay up there in 1962/63 . This was followed by a move to FC Stadlau in the Regionalliga Ost, after Rudolf Pichler had scored 126 goals in exactly 200 games in the A-League.

Rudolf Pichler died on July 25, 2011 at the age of 80.
