The Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG is a German manufacturer of audio equipment for the consumer -Markt and profesionelle users. The group of companies based in Wedemark - Wennebostel ( Hanover region ) was founded on June 1st, 1945 as Laboratorium Wennebostel (short: Labor W ) by Fritz Sennheiser .

The main business areas of the company are the development and production of microphones and headphones . Further business areas are wireless technology for the broadcast sector, conference technology, audiology (hearing aids), aviation communication systems and application products such as headsets for PCs and call centers . In addition to the Sennheiser brand, the Sennheiser Group also includes the studio microphone manufacturer Georg Neumann GmbH (known as Neumann.Berlin , not to be confused with Georg Neumann KG or Microtech Gefell ).

The products are sold through a global network of foreign subsidiaries and sales partners, who in turn sell the goods to major customers, as well as through their own Sennheiser stores. In 2018, Sennheiser employed 2,734 people and achieved sales of 710.7 million euros. The company has four production sites of its own worldwide: in Wennebostel (Germany), Tullamore (Ireland), Albuquerque (United States) and Brașov (Romania).

The company was founded on June 1, 1945 as Laboratorium Wennebostel (short: Labor W) by Fritz Sennheiser . The Institute for High Frequency Technology and Electroacoustics of the Technical University of Hanover was previously located in Wennebostel. It had been moved from Hanover to Wennebostel to the "Villa Hausmann" due to war damage . After the end of the war, most of the institute's staff, who came from all over Germany, returned home. Only seven employees from the region and Fritz Sennheiser from Berlin stayed in Wennebostel.

Fritz Sennheiser decided to use his savings to found a craft business. However, he and his staff could not continue to work in their previous field, as the Allies had not allowed this. The Institute for High Frequency Technology and Electroacoustics worked for the Wehrmacht in the field of encryption technology during the war . That is why the young company first produced measuring devices such as voltmeters, which the former institute had already produced for its own use. Fritz Sennheiser sold this to Siemens , which was cut off from its suppliers after the end of the war. Siemens pre-financed the orders for the voltmeter to Laboratory W. In 1946, the Wennebostel laboratory received an order from Siemens to replicate a microphone from an Austrian supplier because the latter could no longer produce. Labor W accepted this again pre-financed order and named the product MD1 .

In 1947 Labor W then presented a further development of the Austrian model, the MD2, which became the company's first independently developed microphone . Over the years the product range has been expanded bit by bit. Geophones were added in 1949 .

Four years later the laboratory already had 94 employees. In 1956 Labor W developed the first shotgun microphone and one year later it was already producing 100 different product types.

In 1958 the laboratory was renamed “Sennheiser electronic” to make it clear that it was no longer a simple laboratory, but a modern industrial company with over 450 employees. The main aim of the renaming was to strengthen the company's own brand. Sennheiser was previously mainly a supplier for large electronics companies such as B. Siemens and Grundig, the company was now trying to bring its own products to market. The reason for this was that margins in the supplier business fell. As a result, it became more attractive for Sennheiser to produce for the private market.

At the beginning of the 1960s, international business was strengthened and, in addition to the production site in Wennebostel, further “workbenches” were set up in Burgdorf and Soltau . In 1959, Fritz Sennheiser was appointed honorary professor at the TH Hannover, where he lectured on electroacoustics. In 1965, Sennheiser stated that it was the largest specialist company for microphones in Germany.

20 years after it was founded, the company ran into serious difficulties. Sennheiser competed with cheaper products from Asia, especially Japan . The product range had to be revised in order to remain competitive.

In 1968, Sennheiser launched the world's first open headphones with the HD 414 . This type of headphones increased wearing comfort and ensured that headphones became an important pillar of Sennheiser worldwide. At the beginning of the 1970s, Sennheiser was already generating 40% of its sales abroad.

In 1973 Sennheiser was converted into a limited partnership (KG). Fritz Sennheiser became general partner , his son Jörg became a limited partner and three years later also technical manager. In 1977 the plant in Soltau was closed and production in Burgdorf was expanded, where a new production and administration building was acquired. Headphone production has now been concentrated here.

On May 9, 1982, a generation change took place. Jörg Sennheiser became managing director, Fritz Sennheiser became a limited partner. Five years later, Fritz Sennheiser received an Academy Award ("Oscar") for the MKH 816 directional microphone.

In the late 1980s, headphone profit margins continued to decline. The company decided to set up a plant in Ireland where headphone production would be concentrated. The factory opened in 1991. In the same year, Sennheiser took over the studio microphone manufacturer Georg Neumann from Berlin, which was in financial difficulties . In the course of the renovation, the production of microphones was relocated from Berlin to Wennebostel, and Neumann's other production areas were given up.

In the early 1990s, the Sennheiser Orpheus, the world's most expensive headphones, was produced in limited numbers.

In 1996 the legal form changed from a limited partnership to a GmbH & Co. KG . Jörg Sennheiser switched to the newly created supervisory board and handed over management of the company to two managing directors, Stefan Exner and Rolf Meyer. However, as chairman of the supervisory board, he continues to determine the company's fortunes. That same year there was an Emmy Award for merits in developing wireless microphones. A year later, Sennheiser set up a branch office for research and development in Burbank, California. In 1998 and 1999 the company received the German Business Innovation Prize . Also in 1999, the Sennheiser subsidiary Georg Neumann received a Grammy Award . In 2000, Sennheiser inaugurated its fourth plant. Since then, wireless products for the American market have been produced in Albuquerque (New Mexico).

The year 2000 was also the year of EXPO 2000 , which Sennheiser supported as a “Product Partner for Professional Sound”. Almost one million visitors were counted at the Sennheiser stand. Three years later, Sennheiser employees Wolfgang Niehoff and Rolf Meyer were nominated for the German Future Prize. Sennheiser was a first joint venture one, in Copenhagen together with the Danish William Demant Holding- the Sennheiser Communications A / S was founded. In October 2006 the company founded a sales company in Russia with its previous partner ispa. On January 9, 2007, Volker Bartels replaced Rolf Meyer at the head of the company. The Sennheiser family received a special prize from the Praetorius Music Prize .

In 2008 Daniel Sennheiser, the founder's grandson, began working for the company. On March 1, 2010, his brother Andreas Sennheiser also joined the company. Both have been on the management board since 2011 and are shareholders in the company. On May 17, 2010, the company's founder, Fritz Sennheiser, died a few days after his 98th birthday.

In May 2011 the company announced that it would be cooperating with Adidas AG in the future . The German sporting goods manufacturer is responsible for the design of the Sennheiser HD220, Sennheiser CX310 and Sennheiser OMX 680i Sports headphone models.

On July 1, 2013, Andreas and Daniel Sennheiser assumed overall responsibility as managing directors for "Sennheiser electronic GmbH & Co. KG". You lead the company as co-CEOs with equal rights in a dual leadership without division of departments.

In May 2014, Sennheiser founded the new subsidiary "Sennheiser Streaming Technology GmbH (SST)", which develops streaming solutions for software and hardware. In 2015, Sennheiser presented the HE 1 as the successor to the Orpheus. In 2016, the company presented its 3D audio technology program Ambeo ( spelling : AMBEO ). It covers all areas from recording to mixing and processing to the reproduction of immersive surround sound. The Ambeo VR Mic, an Ambisonics microphone for professional VR productions, was the first product to hit the market. Sennheiser operates four of its own production facilities:

The oldest is the main factory in Wennebostel , where Sennheiser has been researching and producing since the company was founded in 1945. Microphones, headsets and headsets, microphone and headphone capsules and diaphragms for microphones are currently being manufactured in Wennebostel. Research and development as well as administration are also located there. Around 1000 people are employed in Wennebostel. This makes this place not only the company's headquarters, but also the location with the most employees.

The second German production site in Burgdorf , founded in 1977, was closed on March 31, 2010. The previous production there was completely relocated to the new building in the main factory in Wennebostel. Up to March 2010, circuit boards for professional applications as well as wireless microphones and monitoring systems were mainly manufactured in Burgdorf. Around 350 people were employed at this location.

In 1990 a third production facility was opened in Tullamore , Ireland . Headphone production is concentrated in this plant. Wireless and wired headphones for entertainment electronics and the audiology sector are manufactured or assembled. In addition, studio monitors and products from the Integrated Systems division are manufactured. The Irish manufacturing facility was Sennheiser's first manufacturing facility abroad.

Since 2000, the company has had a second foreign production facility in the US state of New Mexico in Albuquerque . The focus here is on the production of wireless microphone and monitor systems for the American market. The location became necessary because Sennheiser generates 85% of its sales abroad, large parts of which in the dollar area. In order to reduce exchange rate fluctuations and to be competitive against its competitors, who mainly produce in the dollar area, a plant was built in the USA.

In August 2019, Sennheiser's fourth plant was officially opened in Brasov, Romania. The company produces headphone converters there.

In addition, from 1997 to 2003 the company had another research facility in Burbank near Los Angeles in order to be closer to the trends from North America with its developers.

In 2005, a research office for digital signal processing projects was opened in Palo Alto, California.

In early 2007, the company moved headphone marketing and development to Singapore . This is intended to improve the timely and trend-oriented supply of the very fast-moving consumer electronics market.

Production in Asia

In addition to the two plants in Germany, the company also produces in the foreign plants in Albuquerque and Tullamore , but also purchases large quantities of mechanical components and headphones in Asia , especially in the People's Republic of China .

One of the deciding factors for the relocation was that Sennheiser was under pressure from discount store chains to produce cheaper. Sennheiser products had been in the discounters' range for a long time and were known for their good quality, but also for a higher price compared to other manufacturers. In order not to lose an important source of revenue in the consumer area, the company management decided to relocate the production of a large part of the consumer products from Germany to China.

As early as the early 1990s, the company tried to relocate parts of the production of radio microphones to Shanghai. Due to quality defects, transport damage and illegal replicas of the products by partner companies, Sennheiser brought production back to Germany.

Since about 1998 the company has been buying products and components in Asia again, especially in southern China . It does not operate its own plants, but rather assigns orders to other companies. At the beginning of production, the company had to grapple with similar problems as in the 1990s. The products were not of the required quality, and again products were illegally copied. Sennheiser responded and set up a “Chinese Office” near the production facilities in southern China. This branch office has improved the control of the Chinese partners. Chinese employees who were trained in Germany act as inspectors.

Sennheiser has four research and development locations in Germany, Switzerland, the USA and Singapore. In addition, the 7,000 square meter Innovation Campus opened at the Wennebostel location in 2015. According to its own information, Sennheiser invested a total of 60.5 million euros in research and development in 2018, which corresponds to around 8.5 percent of total sales. While the focus in the Consumer area is on expanding the product portfolio to include 'Smart & Connected' solutions, the research and development topics in the Professional area focus on digital wireless transmission. Under the brand name Ambeo, the area of ​​3D audio or immersive audio is a key future topic for Sennheiser. 3D audio products
