When geophones are called electro-mechanical transducer, the floor vibrations into analog voltage signals to convert.

application

They are used in mining to search for deposits by means of vibroseismics , to detect fractures in water pressure pipes by listening, as well as in construction technology for soil investigation (vibroseismics). From 2015, the city of Munich relocated geophones to determine the location for a new geothermal system .

construction

Geophones essentially consist of a coil and a permanent magnet that are coupled by a spring. A movement of the ground leads to a relative movement between the coil and the magnet. A voltage is induced in the coil proportional to the speed of this relative movement .

Geophones are similar in structure to seismographs . They are used to register the refracted or reflected waves in seismics .

Characteristic values

Geophones have sensitivities around and can be very low-noise (better than −180 dB (speed) at 10 Hz).
