history

Charleville Castle

Tullamore was founded as a British settlement in Ireland around 1570 by the Moore family, later the Earls of Charleville . In 1785 there was a fire disaster when a hot air balloon caught fire after an emergency landing. Many of the city's old buildings date from the period of reconstruction. The Grand Canal has linked Tullamore with Dublin since 1798 . Charleville Castle was also completed in the same year . In 1835 Tullamore became the capital of County Offaly.

Around 1829 Michael Molloy set up a distillery in Tullamore , which later became the property of the Daly family. The Dalys whiskey sold well on the domestic market as well as in England and the Commonwealth. The name Tullamore Dew goes back to the initials of the later manager of the distillery, Daniel E. Williams (DEW), and is now one of the most famous brands of Irish whiskey. Due to the poor economic situation in Ireland, production was stopped in 1954 and the brand was sold to John Power & Son in Dublin. The distillery has never been used again and fell into disrepair. Today only the remains of individual buildings remind of the once important industry in Tullamore. A former warehouse on the Grand Canal was converted into the Tullamore Dew Heritage Center in 2000 . A limited whiskey of the same name is available in specialist shops. Tullamore Dew is now at the distillery in Midleton in County Cork produced and is available as standard , 10 year old single malt or 12yo Special Reserve available.
