Daniel E. Williams

In 1829 Michael Molloy founded the Tullamore distillery in Tullamore in County Offaly, a grain growing region. After his death in 1857, the distillery was owned by his nephew Bernard Daly, who renamed it B. Daly Distillery. Daniel Edmond Williams, who later became General Manager, began his training as a whiskey master distiller at the B. Daly Distillery in 1862 at the age of 14 and created the distillery's trademark in 1887 by adding his initials DEW to the name of the brand. The first advertising slogan was "Give every man his Dew". After the Second World War, Desmond Williams, a grandson of Daniel E. Williams, managed to re-establish Irish whiskey on the world market through targeted marketing measures. At this time he also visited the US market, which is important for Tullamore Dew, and shortly afterwards brought the first Irish blended whiskey onto the market.

In 1954 the Tullamore distillery was closed and the brand was sold to John Power & Son. This company was part of the Irish Distillers group of companies in 1966 . This concentrated all of its production in Midleton , County Cork in the 1970s , where, for example, Gold P was also distilled by John Power & Son in 1791 . In 1994 the Tullamore Dew brand was sold to the C&C Group. Tullamore Dew has been part of William Grant & Sons Irish Brands Ltd. since 2010. The inauguration of the new production facility near Tullamore, which cost 35 million euros to build, took place in September 2014 by the Irish Minister of Agriculture, Simon Coveney. Tullamore Dew is the second largest Irish whiskey brand after Jameson . Distribution in Germany and Austria is carried out by Campari , in Switzerland by Dettling & Marmot.

The Tullamore Dew logo

In the early days, the logo contained the image of a "Red Jug", a red jug. This was chosen based on the red cup of the Red Cup Teas, one of the most popular teas in Ireland at the time and also in Williams' possession. Two wolfhounds have been depicted in the Tullamore Dew logo since the 1950s . This idea came from Daniel's nephew Desmond. He associated loyalty and courage with the wolfhounds. He was convinced that these reflected the outstanding qualities of the Irish.

Flavors

Tullamore Dew is characterized by a gentle, mild and soft taste. Due to its triple distillation and drying of the malt in closed kilns , the Tullamore Dew does not have the typical smoky aroma like many of its competitors from Ireland and Scotland. Thus it is one of the gentle Irish whiskeys.

Components

The Tullamore Dew is a combination of different mature whiskeys. The three main ingredients are:

  • Pot Still Whiskey: It is the most important component and forms the basis of the aroma. Irish Pot Still Whiskey is distilled from at least 30% barley malt and other types of grain, which usually come from Ireland.
  • Grain Whiskey: This whiskey is made from corn and a small amount of barley malt, so it has a simpler flavor.
  • Malt whiskey: The malt whiskey consists of 100% barley malt. In Ireland, three distillations are required to produce a malt.
