Glenfiddich (from Scottish Gaelic Gleann Fhiodhaich ; see below for the meaning and pronunciation of the name ) is a whiskey distillery near Dufftown in the former County of Banffshire in Scotland . Glenfiddich is one of the largest single malt producers in Scotland.

history

The Glenfiddich distillery in the valley of the same name in Speyside in the Scottish Highlands was built in 1886 by William Grant and his family, the stills came from the old Cardhu distillery. The first production of whiskey began at Christmas 1887. Since then, the distillery has been producing at the same location using the same manufacturing process with one of the smallest stills in Scottish distilleries. As the last Scottish whiskey distillery, the company is still owned by the Grant family.

In 1963, no more blend could be made from the brandy because the distillery no longer received any delivery of grain whiskey. So the family decided to bottle and sell whiskey made from pure barley malt; It was only at this point that the modern marketing of single malt whiskey began . In the course of this realignment, marketing was also restructured. The focus was no longer on other distilleries, but on the US market. Through product placements and advertising deals with celebrities, the Glenfiddich brand became an alternative to their own whiskey for people in the United States.

Glenfiddich is one of the most successful whiskey producers whose whiskey is available almost all over the world and whose triangular bottle shape is typical of the distillery. The taste (at least the 12-year-old standard bottling) is very mild and therefore aimed at a wide range of customers.

production

The distillery's water comes from the Robbie Dubh spring. After initial financial success, the Grant family had acquired the entire extended area through which the spring flows in order to prevent factories from setting up that could contaminate the spring water. The distillery has two mash vats ( mashtuns ) from stainless steel and 24 fermentation tanks (washbacks) of Douglas fir with a total of 1,440,000 liters. Is distilled in a two-step process with 10 stills (stills) at the first stage (washstills) per 9100 l and 18 stills in the second stage (spirit stills) per 4550 which almost evenly on two spaces l (resting rooms) are distributed. Until a few years ago, half of the buildings were heated with gas and the other half with coal , but it has now been completely converted to gas.

In 2016, the construction of a third stillhouse began, which will be the same size as the other stillhouses and which will increase the capacity of the distillery by 50% after completion. Glenfiddich processes around 400 tons of barley malt into around 40,000 liters of alcohol per day (April 2016, information from a tour guide at Glenfiddich).

The whiskey is stored in 45 warehouses in the immediate vicinity of the distillery. The company produces the barrels for storage in its own cooperage or coppersmith's shop from used barrel staves. Glenfiddich is one of the very few Scottish malt whiskey distilleries to bottle its own products.

Glenfiddich is one of the most successful and well-known single malts. In addition to its quality, this success may have contributed to the early distribution as single malt whiskey (1963) and the opening of a visitor center as early as 1969. The distillery can be visited as part of a guided tour (also in German) (admission 2018: from £ 10 ).

The Balvenie distillery belonging to the group is located on the premises of the distillery .

Meaning and pronunciation of the name

On the German version of the distillery's website, the name is translated as "Valley of the Deer". The translation of Gleann Fhiodhaich as “valley of bushes” (English shrubs) is more obvious, however, “valley of deer” would be Gleann nam Fiadh in today's Gaelic . In some sources the name is traced back to Fida, the son of the legendary Pictish king Cruithne, or the name of the historic Pictish province of Fidach.

Among English speakers in general, [ ɡlɛnˈf einedɪk ] is quite a common pronunciation. From Germans, the name is obviously pronounced with the “I-sound” at the end, ie [ ɡlɛnˈfɪdɪç ], which can be justified in that Scottish Gaelic, like German, distinguishes between a “soft” I- sound and a “hard one “ Ah- sound ( velar or uvular ), and the former would be included in the Gaelic form of the place name (although the Gaelic dialects have long been extinct in the east of Scotland ). In Scottish English , as used in the presentation by Glenfiddich itself on their website, a sound can be heard that German speakers tend to perceive as harsh (velar), but phonetically in the middle between German me and German oh .
