Cardhu is Gaelic and means "black rock".
production
The Speyside distillery's water comes from springs on Mannoch Hill and Lyne Burn. It has a mash tun ( mash do ) (7.2 t) and eight fermenting tanks ( wash backs ) (together 296,000 l). Distillation takes place in three wash stills (together 36,000 l) and three spirit stills (together 31,500 l), which are heated by steam.
Products
The whiskey from this distillery is an important part of the Johnnie Walker Blends . A 12 year old, a 15 year old, an 18 year old and a 22 year old single malt whiskey appear under their own label . There is also the Special Cask Reserve in small editions , also a single malt whiskey and meanwhile other bottlings without an indication of age, e.g. B. Amber Rock and Gold Reserve . Cardhu has been bottled twice as a rare malt , in 1998 and 2000. The independent bottler Signatory has a 27-year-old bottled in 1999.
In the 70s and 80s, an 8-year-old and a 15-year-old Cardhu were bottled. These are hard to come by today and are very popular among collectors.
A so-called “pure malt” whiskey, whose components are at least 12 year old single malts from neighboring Speyside distilleries, aroused people's minds in 2003 because it was bottled in an almost identical bottle as the single malt whiskey. Diageo withdrew the "Pure Malt" in early 2004. In order to avoid such incidents in the future, the categories were redefined in the Scotch Whiskey Regulations of 2009. Whether this really provides more clarity is questionable, however, since “Vatted Malt” is now called “Blended Malt”, which can easily be confused with “Blended (Scotch) Whiskey”.
