Clynelish ['klaɪ̯nlɪʃ] is a whiskey distillery near Brora , Highland , Scotland .
history
There was a predecessor to today's Clynelish distillery of the same name, founded in 1819 by George Granville Levison-Gower , the second Marquis of Stafford and later the Duke of Sutherland. Today's Clynelish distillery (sometimes called Clynelish B ) was built in 1967 right next to the old distillery (initially called Clynelish A ) to replace it. The old distillery was mothballed in May 1968, but went back into production in April 1969. Clynelish A was then renamed to Brora and Clynelish B to Clynelish . Both distilleries produced in parallel until 1983 when the Brora distillery was finally closed. The Clynelish distillery has belonged to United Distillers (UD) since 1987 and therefore to Diageo since 1998 , but it was not until 1990 that the license was granted by Ainslie & Heilbron Ltd. transferred to United Malt and Grain Distillers (UMGD), the new name of Scottish Malt Distillers (SMD).
production
The water for the distillery, which is part of the Highlands / Northern Highlands region, comes from the Clynemilton Burn. The malt used is sourced from the Glen Ord malt house . Clynelish has a mash tun (12.5 t) made of stainless steel and eight fermentation vats (58,600 l each) made of larch wood . Distillation takes place in three wash stills (17,000 l each) and three spirit stills (19,000 l each), which are heated by steam.
