Oban is a whiskey distillery in Oban , Argyll and Bute , Scotland . It belongs to the spirits group Diageo (formerly United Distillers), the whiskey is marketed as part of the group's Classic Malts series. The distillery buildings are classified in category B in the Scottish monument lists.
history
The distillery was founded in 1794 by the brothers John and Hugh Stevenson. The small harbor town of the same name, in the heart of which it lies today, developed around the distillery. In 1866 the distillery went to Peter Cumstie, who sold it to James Walter Higgin in 1883. He had it renovated in 1890, but the construction of new warehouses had to be stopped after archaeological finds - around 5000 year old remains of six adults and four children. The finds can now be viewed at the National Museum of Antiquities in Edinburgh . In 1898 the distillery went to Alexander Edward, the then owner of the Aultmore distillery, and in 1923 to Dewar & Sons and thus ultimately to Diageo , the current owner. From 1931 to 1937 and from 1969 to 1972 there was no production.
production
The water for the distillery, which belongs to the Highlands / Western Highlands region, comes from Loch Gleann a'Bherraidh. Since the company's own malt house was closed, the lightly peated malt has been sourced from Roseisle Maltings near Elgin . The distillery has a mash tun (6 tons) made of stainless steel and four fermentation tanks (28,000 l each) made of larch wood . Distillation takes place in a wash still (18,800 l) and a spirit still (8296 l), which are heated by steam. The whiskey matures on site in bourbon and Montilla sherry casks and is then taken to Leven , Fife for bottling , where Diageo operates a large bottling plant.

Oban has a visitor center and can be visited. Visitors are allowed to keep their tasting glass after the tour. A whiskey from the barrel that has been stored for around 8 years and the 14-year-old (see picture) are served for the sample.
