Bernhard Tittel

Bernhard Tittel (born January 6, 1873 in Vienna ; † December 24, 1942 there ) was an Austrian conductor and composer . From 1903 to 1907 he was chief conductor of the Stadttheater-Orchester Halle . After working in Vienna for several years, he was general music director at the Royal Opera in Budapest from 1923 to 1928 .

Life

Bernhard Tittel was born in Vienna in 1873 and attended high school there. He was a student of the Vienna Cäcilien-Verein and studied at the music academy in his hometown, where Joseph Hellmesberger , Robert Fuchs and Ferdinand Löwe were among his teachers. He then worked as an organist at various Vienna churches.

From 1897 to 1901 he was solo coach and conductor at the court theater in Karlsruhe. In 1901 he went to the Stadttheater Halle as Kapellmeister . From 1903 to 1907 he was chief conductor of the city ​​theater orchestra there . In 1907 he moved to the Nuremberg City Theater .

In 1912/13 he was Kapellmeister at the Vienna Volksoper and from 1915 to 1922 at the Vienna Court Opera . His repertoire included a. Verdi's A Masked Ball and Rigoletto , Bizet's Carmen , Wagner's The Flying Dutchman and Flotow's Martha . During his years in Vienna he also conducted the Philharmonic repeatedly . In 1920 he founded the symphony subscription concerts named after him. From 1923 to 1928 he was general music director at the Royal Opera in Budapest.

In addition, he composed several works a. a. Choirs and overtures as well as the symphony in D minor (performed several times under his direction by the Vienna Symphony Orchestra ) and the opera Cesare Borgias Ende , which premiered in 1906 at the Stadttheater Halle.

Tittel died in 1942 and was buried in the Hietzingen cemetery in Vienna's 13th district.
