Michael Schläpfer

Michael Schläpfer (born May 19, 1822 in Rehetobel ; † May 28, 1885 in Herisau ; resident in Rehetobel) was a Swiss editor and publicist from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Michael Schläpfer was the son of Hans Heinrich Schläpfer, weaving manufacturer and councilor, and Anna Maria Locher. In 1844 he married Magdalena Elisabeth Bion, daughter of Peter Bion, master bookbinder in St. Gallen . In 1864 he entered into a second marriage with Wilhelmine Anderes, daughter of Konrad Anderes. He completed an apprenticeship as a printer with his uncle Johannes Schläpfer in Trogen . In 1843 he founded a printing company in St. Gallen and was the editor of the newspaper Der yellow Kourier . In 1844 he moved the company to Herisau. From 1844 to 1853 he published other newspapers. In 1846 he founded the Literary Institute . Until 1847 he printed revolutionary writings by German authors . In 1852 he bought the Appenzeller Zeitung . Until 1862 he was its editor. He achieved his business breakthrough and gained national recognition thanks to a high level of editorial content and a progressive, liberal attitude. From 1859 to 1863 he served as a community judge. From 1863 to 1869 he was district judge. From 1869 to 1875 he held the office of criminal judge and from 1875 to 1882 that of chief judge. He was a member of the community school commission. From 1882 to 1883 he sat on the audit council. He was the founder and promoter of charitable foundations and associations .
