Christian Elsner

Christian Elsner (born August 11, 1965 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German opera singer ( tenor ) and singing teacher at the Karlsruhe University of Music .

Life

From 1982 Christian Elsner sang in the Freiburg Cathedral Choir and with the Freiburg Cathedral Boys' Choir under the direction of Domkapellmeister Raimund Hug. There he got his first singing lessons from the American opera tenor Richard Riffel. At the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt am Main, he studied singing with Martin Gründler from 1987 , where he was a member of Charles Spencer's lied class from 1990 and a guest auditor in Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's lied class at HDK Berlin from 1992 .

After graduating in 1995, Christian Elsner a. a. at the Staatstheater Mainz , the Theater Bremen , the Städtische Bühnen Heidelberg and the Staatstheater Darmstadt with roles such as Lenski in Tchaikovsky's Eugen Onegin , Macduff in Verdi's Macbeth or the title role in Mozart's Idomeneo .

Since 2007, after a change of vocal subject with roles such as Siegmund in Wagner's Walküre or the title role in Wagner's Parsifal , he has made a name for himself as a Wagner tenor at the German National Theater Weimar , the Kassel State Theater , the Semperoper Dresden and the Vienna State Opera .

As a concert soloist he sang a. a. in the Berlin Philharmonie , the Teatro alla Scala , the Vienna Musikverein , the Carnegie Hall New York and the Suntory Hall Tokyo and works regularly with conductors like Marek Janowski , Mariss Jansons , Lorin Maazel , Yannick Nézet-Séguin , Sir Simon Rattle , and David Zinman together . With his permanent duo partner Burkhard Kehring , Christian Elsner gave recitals in the Hamburger Musikhalle , the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, Brussels, the Beethovenfest Bonn, the MDR Music Summer and the Schubertiade Feldkirch. In 2015 he sang the role of Johannes in Franz Schmidt's oratorio The Book with Seven Sieges under Manfred Honeck at the Wiener Musikverein.

As a professor of singing he has been teaching at the University of Music Würzburg since 2006 , and has been professor of singing at the Karlsruhe University of Music since 2017 .
