Manfred Honeck (born September 17, 1958 in Nenzing ) is an Austrian violist and conductor . Since 2008 he has been music director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra .

Career

Honeck was born in 1958 in the market town of Nenzing in Vorarlberg and grew up in Vienna . He studied violin and viola at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . From 1983 he worked as a violist with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and later with the Vienna Philharmonic .

Honeck began his conducting career in 1987 as Claudio Abbado's assistant at the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra in Vienna. He was the director of the Jeunesses-Musicales-Orchester Vienna. In 1989 he made his debut at the Vienna Volksoper with the operetta Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss . From 1991 to 1996 he was first conductor at the Zurich Opera House , where he received the European Conducting Prize in 1993 . Other early stages in his career include Leipzig, where he was one of the three main conductors of the MDR Symphony Orchestra alongside Fabio Luisi and Marcello Viotti from 1996 to 1999 , and Oslo, where he not only took over the musical direction of the Norwegian National Opera for one year at short notice in 1997 , but also from 1998 as principal guest conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra .

From 2000 to 2006 he was chief conductor of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra Stockholm, from 2008 to 2011 and again from 2013 to 2016 he was chief guest conductor of the Czech Philharmonic in Prague.

From 2007 to 2011, Honeck was general music director of the Stuttgart State Opera . There he conducted many premieres as well as numerous symphony concerts with the Stuttgart State Orchestra . Guest performances in the field of opera have taken him to the Semperoper Dresden, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Royal Opera in Copenhagen, the White Nights Festival in St. Petersburg and the Salzburg Festival . He has been Artistic Director of the International Wolfegger Concerts for over 20 years.

Honeck has been Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since the 2008/09 season . His contract was recently extended to the 2021/22 season. Guest performances regularly take him to music metropolises and to major music festivals, including the BBC Proms , the Musikfest Berlin , the Lucerne Festival , the Rheingau Music Festival , the Beethovenfest Bonn , the Grafenegg Festival , Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center in New York. Honeck and his orchestra maintain a close relationship with the Wiener Musikverein . After a one-week residency in 2012, three more concerts followed in spring 2016 as part of a European tour. In the summer of 2017, another tour led to Europe's most important music festivals.

His activity in Pittsburgh is documented by numerous recordings. All of the SACDs for Reference Recordings received a large number of excellent reviews. After two Grammy nominations for Dvořák's Eighth Symphony and the Symphonic Suite from Jenůfa by Janáček, conceived by Honeck himself, as well as for Bruckner's Symphony No. 4 in 2015 and 2016, the current recording, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, was awarded two in January 2018 Grammys named "Best Orchestral Performance" and "Best Engineered Album, Classical". The recording of Beethoven's Eroica and R. Strauss' Horn Concerto, which was released in autumn 2018, was also nominated for two Grammys in the aforementioned categories.

As a guest conductor, Honeck has conducted all leading international orchestras, including the Staatskapelle Berlin , the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Berlin Philharmonic , the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden , the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra , the London Symphony Orchestra , the Vienna Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra or the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra . He is often a guest at the Verbier Festival . In the 2017/18 season he will conduct the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra , the Orchester de Paris , the Chicago Symphony Orchestra , the Israel Philharmonic , the Vienna Symphony , the New York Philharmonic , the Bamberg Symphony and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia .

Honeck was awarded honorary doctorates by several US universities. On behalf of the Austrian Federal President, he was honored in 2016 with the professional title of "Professor". The expert jury of the International Classical Music Awards (ICMA) named him “Artist of the Year” in 2018.

Honeck has eight siblings. His brother Rainer Honeck is concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic . He is married and has six children.
