Alexios Musele (Strategos)

Alexios Musele ( Middle Greek Ἀλέξιος Μουσελέ , also Mosele, Musulem ; † after 792 ) was a Byzantine general of Armenian origin.

Life

In September 790, Empress Irene tried , who until then as regent for her son and nominal basileus Constantine VI. had acted to have all Byzantine troops sworn in on them. Since the troops of the Armeniacon issue refused, Irene sent the Spatharios and Drungarios Alexios Musele with the task of persuading the stubborn Armeniaks to take the oath. Alexios, however, took their side, was appointed strategos and Constantine VI. to proclaim sole emperor. After the other issues had also followed suit, the young emperor, after the temporary disempowerment of his mother and her powerful minister Staurakios , confirmed Alexios in the office of strategist, but shortly afterwards ordered him back to Constantinople , where he granted him the dignity of patrician .

Since Constantine VI. As the sole ruler soon proved to be incapable, he rehabilitated his mother Irene in January 792 and made her co-empress. Against this, there was renewed resistance in the Armeniakon, which was linked to the demand to reinstate Alexios Musele as strategist on the topic. This was then accused of wanting to make himself emperor. Constantine had him whipped, sheared to the monk and imprisoned in the Praitorion in Constantinople. After the heavy defeat of Constantine VI. against the Bulgarians in the battle of Marcellae , the Tagmata allegedly made an attempt to bring the former emperor Nikephoros or Alexios Musele to the throne, so that Constantine VI. both pretenders blinded at the persuasion of Irene and Staurakios . When this became known in the Armeniacon issue, another rebellion arose there, which was not put down until the summer of 793. Alexios' further fate is unknown.
