Byzantine Empire
- August 15 : On the orders of his mother Irene , the Byzantine emperor Constantine VI. trapped, deposed, and blinded ; he later dies of the wounds. Irene can be proclaimed sole empress.

- October 28 : Charlemagne issues the Capitulare Saxonicum . The law solves the since 782 valid Capitulatio de partibus Saxoniae to criticism from the Church on the death penalty limits and replaces them with fines. Furthermore, it equates the subject Saxons to the other peoples of the Frankish Empire . The softening of Karl's occupation regime is a sign of the increasing consolidation of his rule in Saxony .
