- In Japan the capital of the empire is moved from Nara to Heian-kyō (Kyōto) and remains so for a good 800 years. The Nara period is thus replaced by the Heian period . The long-standing practice of changing capital with every emperor is finally abandoned. The cause was the fear that death would pollute a place.
