Sola (* in southern England; † December 3, 794 in Solnhofen ) was a missionary and saint who worked in the Franconian Empire .

Live and act

Like Willibald , the first bishop of Eichstätt , Sola also came to the continent from southern England in the so-called third wave of missions.

In 744 Sola came to Fulda at the newly founded Benedictine monastery on behalf of Winfried- Bonifatius , where he was soon ordained a priest by St. Boniface .

Between 745 and 750 Sola left the monastery with the order to work as a missionary in the southern Sualafeldgau . Under the influence of Winfried Bonifatius , he moved to Husen, today's Solnhofen , which is named after him. There he built an oratory , a small church in a place where two churches had previously stood, and worked as a missionary until his death; he also administered the property entrusted to him.

In 793 Charlemagne visited Sola on his journey from Regensburg to the royal court in Weissenburg . From there he inspected the work on the Fossa Carolina , the planned connecting canal between the Swabian Rezat and Altmühl . In recognition of Sola's services, Karl gave him the place of his work.

In his will, Sola bequeathed his entire property to the Fulda Monastery, including the goods given by King Karl. He was buried on the north outer wall of his church.

canonization

In 833 Gundram, court chaplain of Ludwig the Pious and nephew of the Fulda abbot (and later Archbishop of Mainz) Hrabanus Maurus, came to Solnhofen to take on the duties of the newly founded Benedictine provosty of Solnhofen and the royal estate. His devotion Solas prompted him with the permission of Eichstätter Bishop Altuin the raising bones Solas and to bury new to the north aisle of the basilica. This act was Sola's canonization . The reason for this provided on the one hand Sola's biography, the Vita Suaolonis , which was written down by Ermanrich von Ellwangen between 836 and 842 , and on the other hand the traditional miracles, such as the healing of the blind, deaf-mute and crippled under the sign of the cross. Sola's religious feast day is December 5th. In particular, he is the patron saint of all hard workers in the Eichstätt Jurabic . He is also the namesake of the local Catholic church .
