Irmingard (also Ermengard ) von Hespengau (* around 780; † October 3, 818 in Angers , also buried there) was the first wife of the future Emperor Ludwig the Pious since 794 .

Irmingard was the daughter of a Count Ingram , about whose life nothing is known. In 794 she was betrothed to Ludwig , the fourth son of Emperor Charlemagne , whom she finally married in 798. Pope Hadrian I anointed Louis King of Aquitaine in 781 . Since his three older brothers Pippin , Karl and Pippin died in 810 and 811 respectively, Irmingard was now the wife of the heir to the imperial crown. Her father-in-law, Charlemagne, died in 814 and Ludwig succeeded him. In 816, Irmingard was crowned empress by Pope Stephan IV in Reims . She died two years later.

The marriage resulted in six children, including Emperor Lothar I , Pippin I , King of Aquitaine, and Ludwig II , King of the East Franconian Empire.
