Stephan IV (V) († January 24, 817 in Rome ) was the successor of Leo III on June 22, 816 . elected pope .

effect

Stephen's short pontificate was nevertheless very significant because it led to a rapprochement between the papacy and the strengthened Frankish royal family. Through him, Ludwig the Pious , a Frankish king was anointed emperor for the first time and crowned with an alleged Constantine crown, which at the same time placed the Frankish empire in the ancient Western Roman tradition. Stephan achieved the guarantee of free papal elections from Kaiser Ludwig. However, this was only granted to his successor Paschal I after his death . By renouncing constant interference in Rome, Ludwig wanted to protect himself against the influence of the Pope on the decisions about the future of the dynasty and empire.

count

In an alternative count, the priest Stephen II , who was elected Pope but died before his episcopal ordination, is recognized as Pope. As a result, all other popes with this name are counted with a higher number, i.e. Stephan IV. Than Stephan V. - In specialist literature, the spelling Stephan IV. (V) is often used to avoid misunderstandings .
