Saint-Paul de Cormery Abbey : Erected by Charlemagne in memory of Luitgard

Luitgard († June 4, 800 in Tours ) was from 794 to 800 the partner of the Frankish king Charlemagne .

Life

Very little is known about the Alemannin Luitgard, who comes from a noble family. It has often been assumed that she had been married to Charlemagne since 794 after his previous wife, Fastrada, passed away. However, this is doubtful due to the uncertain source statements. In this respect, it is also uncertain that she had entered into a legitimate relationship with Karl. In any case, Luitgard was described as a great beauty, well educated, and Alcuin praised her in his letters; It also evidently had some influence politically. Luitgard died on June 4, 800 in the Saint-Martin monastery in Tours , where she was buried.
