Holy Gumbert

Gumbert (von Ansbach) (* 8th century in Ansbach ; † March 11 (?) 795 ibid) was a Benedictine abbot . He is venerated as a saint.

biography

Gumbert was born in the 8th century, came from the Mattonen family and thus belonged to the Carolingian imperial aristocracy. The exact date of birth is not known. The Würzburg bishop Burkard is said to have taught him early on to live poorly amid all wealth. Around 750 he founded a Benedictine monastery on his estate in Ansbach, which he also led as abbot . This monastery was a "base of the Franconian area registration, which Charlemagne granted immunity and free election of abbots in 786". He was very popular as the guardian of the Würzburg cathedral chapter . After he was elected bishop at the end of 794, he died on March 11, 795 before his episcopal ordination.

memory

Relics of him are in the Gumbertus Church in Ansbach as well as in Cologne and Brussels . In art he is depicted as a bishop with a staff and a church model. He is the namesake of the Gumbertus Bible and the Gumbertus Gospel .

He is represented in the coat of arms of Clingen (Thuringia), there the Gumbertikirche also bears the patronage.

In his honor, July 15th is a Catholic feast day, previously it was March 11th.
