He was first canon of the Würzburg Cathedral and, as provost of Neumünster Abbey, he had the sympathy of Konrad III. acquired. He took part in the preparations for the crusade in the spring of 1147. He died of the plague. As a new custom, his heart was buried separately in the Ebrach monastery .

In February 1147 there were riots against the Jews in Würzburg. The riots, which spread particularly in the lower classes, were triggered by swarms of returning crusaders after the mutilated corpse of a man was found on the Main and the suspicion arose that he had been murdered by Jews. As a result, there was a pogrom that killed 20 Jews. When the bishop refused to canonize the found dead, the mob threatened the bishop's life and he only escaped by fleeing. As the bunch of crusaders moved on, the riots dissolved again.
